Update on COVID-19 (9/6): Mayor Bhalla urges residents returning from hot spots or in compromising situations to get tested

Below is an update from Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla on COVID-19:

Impact of COVID-19 in Hoboken

The Hoboken Health Department has reported the following, new COVID-19 cases:

September 3: 4
September 4: 4
September 5: 3

As of Friday, the Health Department reported 667 residents have fully recovered from COVID-19. Hoboken has a total of 729 COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 31 total fatalities.

As our region continues to gradually re-open with COVID-19 restrictions relaxed, including the re-opening of indoor dining, gyms, college campuses, and schools, we expect to see an uptick of cases both in Hoboken and across the State, based on the nature of the virus. However, I’m hopeful that with added safety measures taken by residents and visitors, we can continue to limit the spread as much as possible in Hoboken.

Please celebrate remainder of Labor Day weekend responsibly, and get tested after returning from hot spots

As we celebrate the remainder of the Labor Day weekend, I ask everyone to please do so responsibly, and to please keep in mind we are still in a pandemic where we should all continue to exercise caution. I know it is tempting to gather with close family and friends outside the household, but given many of Hoboken’s positive COVID-19 cases have been those who have congregated in groups and especially indoors, we continue to recommend the following:

  • Avoid large group gatherings and parties, especially indoors - situations where the virus is most likely to spread
  • Remain outdoors as much as possible when interacting with others
  • Maintain social distancing at least 6 feet away from others
  • Wear a face mask, especially when social distancing is not possible
If you are traveling to a hot spot state, or if you may have been in a situation where you believe an exposure may have occurred such as any type of larger gathering (especially indoors), we recommend that you get tested at least 5-7 days after returning to Hoboken, self-quarantine until you receive your test, and then for the full 14 days. Getting tested too soon after returning (before the 5-7 days) could lead to an inaccurate result.

After the July 4 weekend, when we provided the same recommendations as above, a number of residents in potentially compromising situations or returning from hot spot states did the right thing and got tested. Several of those residents were asymptomatic, and still tested positive for COVID-19 – responsible, proactive steps which undoubtedly prevented other infections from occurring. Even if you do not have symptoms of COVID-19 but were in those situations or are returning from a hot spot state, please be sure to take the extra precaution and get tested.
