License plate recognition camera hit results in arrest for possession of stolen vehicle, burglary tools, and felony warrant.
On Friday, September 11, 2020, at approximately 8:56 PM, the Sausalito Police Department received an alert from our License Plate Recognition Cameras of a stolen 2006 Chevrolet Silverado entering Sausalito from Alexander Ave. The Chevrolet had been reported stolen out of San Francisco on September 10, 2020.
Sausalito Police Officers immediately responded and conducted a comprehensive search of the area. Officer Honour Knudsen located the Chevrolet and a traffic stop was affected in the 100 block of South Street. Officers removed and detained the driver, Omar Ulla (28-year-old resident of San Francisco) without incident. Inside of the Chevrolet, Officers discovered tools commonly used to commit burglaries.
Ulla was arrested and booked into the Marin County Jail for vehicle theft, possession of the stolen vehicle, and possession of burglary tools. During the identification verification part of the booking process, it was discovered that Ulla had a no bail felony warrant out of San Francisco for vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of burglary tools. Ulla was arrested and booked on the warrant.
Since the City of Sausalito’s License Plate Recognition Camera program became operational on Thursday, May 18, 2017, forty-three (43) stolen vehicles have been recovered and forty-nine (49) individuals have been arrested for various crimes. The goal of the License Plate Recognition Camera program is to increase public safety by utilizing technology to alert Law Enforcement to wanted vehicles, enhance post-crime investigative abilities, and deter crime by increasing the likelihood of suspect identification.
