Smoke Continues - Spare the Air Alert Extended
Smoke conditions from the various wildfires in Northern California continue to linger throughout the East Bay.
Air quality remains in the unhealthy range, and residents are encouraged to limit time outdoor and limit strenuous activity outdoors when possible. The Spare the Air Alert has been extended until Wednesday, Sept 16, 2020.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District shared the following information about the current conditions:
- Smoke plume that blanketed California and offshore continued to mix down to the surface although the main plume that impacted the Bay Area in the past three days has moved east of the Bay Area The lingering smoke appears less thick because it has been dispersed into the atmosphere during the past few days. However, there are still a lot of smoke particles around to continue causing unhealthy air quality conditions.
- Light westerly onshore winds at the ground level overnight kept the smoke in the Bay Area. AQI readings are uniform as the smoke continues to spread out in all directions.
- Thick smoke is being emitted into the Central Valley from the southern Sierra Nevada (particularly the Creek Fire and the SQF Complex). However, most of the smoke is expected to remain east of the Bay Area.
- Marine layer is around 2,000 feet this morning. Any smoke below this level is trapped near the ground surface. However, there are also smoke above the marine layer.
- Satellite image this morning shows thick smoke continuing to cover California and offshore. The smoke impacting the region today originates from fires along the West Coast.
- Ash falling is still possible today because the massive smoke plume is still in place.
- This morning, air quality was Unhealthy across the Bay Area. We do anticipate conditions to remain the same for today, or some slow improvements along the coast. Smoke is expected to sink down to the ground. Onshore winds will push some smoke east to Nevada, but also bring in more smoke from the ocean.
- Spare the Air (STA) is in effect through Wednesday, September 16, 2020.
