ACCREDITATION ASSESSMENT TEAM INVITES PUBLIC COMMENT

A team of assessors from the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group (WILEAG) will arrive on September 29, 2020 to examine all aspects of the Middleton Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operation, and support service, Chief Troy Hellenbrand announced today.

The team will verify that the Middleton Police Department meets the Board’s state-of-the-art standards which is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation - a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, Chief Hellenbrand said.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments regarding the Middleton Police Department’s ability to comply with WILEAG’s standards. The public may call (608)824-7345 on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 between the hours of 1:00PM and 3:00PM. Telephone comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with WILEAG’s standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Middleton Police Department lobby at 7341 Donna Drive. The Department contact for further information is Chief Troy Hellenbrand at (608)824-7305.

Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Middleton Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write to Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group, WILEAG, at P.O. Box 528, Hartland, WI 53029.

The Middleton Police Department has to comply with 242 standards in order to gain accredited status, Chief Hellenbrand said. “Maintaining our WILEAG accreditation status is a lengthy and time-consuming process that involves a significant number of Middleton Police Department employees. Despite the time commitment, I think it is important for our organization to show the people we serve that we are operating under established best practices and professional standards.”

The Accreditation Manager for the Middleton Police Department is Captain Jeremy Geiszler. Captain Geiszler said the assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies. The assessors will review written material, interview individuals, and visit offices and the places where compliance can be witnessed. The assessors are: Team Leader Lieutenant Matthew Wagner – Cottage Grove PD; Assessor Chief Jennifer Pagenkopf – Oregon PD; and Assessor Sergeant Ryan Werner – Baraboo PD.

Once the WILEAG Board’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Board, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status, Chief Hellenbrand stated.

Accreditation status is granted for three years, during which time the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
