IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19/SANITIZING FOR FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2020

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 / SANITIZING
Friday, September 25, 2020
BURR RIDGE IS IN WEST SUBURBAN REGION 8 “ –MASK FOR US”

This is our first Autumn weekend, and begins the new season with some good news: Positivity Rate, Hospital Admissions, and Medical Bed and  ICU  Bed Availability metrics remain flat or declining for Region 8, which consists of DuPage County and Kane County. However, good news does not mean relaxing our vigilance. The total case count in Burr Ridge now is 273; up from 251 since my
September 18 Mayor Message, while the 14-day active case count for the Village overall is 31. Region 4 (Metro East) remains in a stricter state of being, while Region 1 (Northwest Illinois) is in danger of entering a similar status due to its positivity rate approaching 8%. We must use masks, avoid large gatherings, and socially-distance per the Governor’s executive order. Abiding by this simple guidance WILL bring continued good news.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is preparing a new standard for drugmakers to qualify for emergency  authorization  of  a coronavirus  vaccine  that  will  almost  certainly  delay  public  availability of a vaccine until after Election Day. The FDA will require manufacturers seeking an emergency authorization — a far quicker process than a formal approval — to follow participants in late-stage clinical trials for a median of at least two months, starting after they receive a second vaccine shot. The purpose of the two-month observation period is to ensure that the drug makers can  make  an  above-and-beyond  scientific  confirmation  that  their  vaccine  is
effective  against mitigating the coronavirus and thus increase public confidence in the efficacy of the vaccine. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has also laid out a four-phase process for public vaccination, wherein high-risk workers in healthcare facilities, first responders, and those in congregate care settings would receive the vaccine first, followed by workers in essential industries and then finally the general population. The CDC expects first vaccinations to occur sometime over the winter (between December and February 2021) and for sufficient herd immunity through vaccination to occur by Q3 2021.

I have now heard proposals from two companies who sanitize interior spaces, one using vapor technology and another using UV light technology. I am, with staff, exploring how better to protect our residents and patrons when the weather forces us indoor, including applying their technologies in our public buildings and vehicles. This includes public-private partnerships with our businesses to invest in technologies such as these to create the safest community to shop and dine as we enter winter.

The nation mourns the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. After becoming the first Justice to lie in repose for two days outside the Supreme Court this week, she now becomes the first woman to lie in state at the United States Capitol. I offer  you this quote from her on leadership:

“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you."

– Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
