Early Morning House Fire Claims the Lives of Mother and Son, Remains Under Investigation

On Saturday, September 26, 2020, at 1:44 AM, Fremont firefighters responded to a working house fire on Serra Place.

Firefighters arrived within minutes to a two-story residence with heavy smoke billowing out of the front door and fire showing from the rear of the property.

Prior to the arrival of firefighters, two adult females and one teenage female exited the residence. Realizing a teenage male remained inside of the house, one of the adults bravely re-entered the residence in an attempt to rescue him as flames and heavy smoke rapidly advanced from the first floor to the second floor.

Crews began an aggressive interior attack with simultaneous search and rescue efforts due to confirmed reports two people were still inside the residence. During the primary search of the home, firefighters located the adult female and a teenage male together on the second floor in a rear bedroom. Both victims sustained life-threatening injuries, were rescued by firefighters and transported to a nearby hospital. Despite persistent lifesaving efforts by Fremont Fire and Falck paramedics, both victims died.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau has confirmed the identity of the two victims as Feda Almaliti, 43, and her son, Muhammed Almaliti, 15.

We are deeply saddened by this devastating incident and send our condolences to the family and friends of the Almaliti family.

“This is a tragic and heartbreaking incident. Feda Almaliti courageously risked her life to save her son’s,” said Fire Chief Curtis Jacobson. “Her actions were selfless and valiant.”

The one-alarm fire was fully contained to the building of origin and extinguished within 25 minutes of firefighters arriving at the scene.

One firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation and released shortly thereafter. The adult female and teenage female who exited the residence prior to the arrival of firefighters were also transported to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Including the firefighter, injuries caused by the early morning fire resulted in the transport of three adults and two minors.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire Investigators have determined the first floor kitchen area as the area of the one-alarm fire’s origin.

The death of Feda Almaliti and her son, Muhammed Almaliti, are the first fire-related deaths in Fremont since 2010.
