Middleton Police Launch Surveillance Camera Registry
Do you have a video surveillance system that records the exterior of your home or business in the City of Middleton? Do you want to keep your neighborhood safe and help deter crime in Middleton? Do you want to help Middleton police solve crimes? If you answered YES to any of these questions, you may want to consider registering your surveillance systems with the Middleton Police Department.
The Middleton Police Department is launching a Surveillance CameraRegistry And Mapping (S.C.R.A.M.) program to provide an opportunity for residents and business owners to help officers solve local crimes with the help of existing exterior video surveillance cameras. With the popular use of surveillance systems, video evidence has frequently helped officers develop leads and bring investigations to conclusion. In fact, home surveillance systems played a major role in helping Middleton Detectives resolve two recent major investigations that would have otherwise likely remained unsolved.
Participation in this program is entirely voluntary. Officers will NOT be monitoring registered surveillance systems. Using the geographic location of registered camera systems, Middleton police officers will be able to contact a registrant to determine if they have helpful recordings if a crime occurs in the vicinity of the registered surveillance camera system. Because they are caught in the act of committing a crime, video surveillance is one of the best ways to catch and convict offenders.
As crimes occur, many residents and business owners are oftentimes unaware that their camera systems may have captured information that could potentially help solve a crime. Likewise, law enforcement is not always aware who may have potentially vital video evidence. By partnering with the community, officers can quickly identify locations of nearby cameras that may have captured helpful evidence instead of going door to door trying to locate people who have cameras which can be very labor intensive and could delay investigations. Officers will only contact registrants if there is an incident near their camera that they believe may have video footage that could assist in the investigation.
