Narrative:
The armed suspect who confronted deputies and was shot early Sunday morning has been identified as Austin Manzano, 24, of Camarillo. Manzano was armed with a large knife and a replica handgun, which he pointed at deputies before being shot on Calle La Sombra and Bradford Avenue shortly after 1:00 am. Manzano had called 911 stating he was armed with a loaded handgun and would start shooting people in the neighborhood if deputies were not sent immediately.
 
Deputy Robert Medina and Senior Deputy Greg Tougas were the first deputies to arrive at the call on Bradford Avenue. Manzano refused to drop the weapons and advanced toward the deputies in a threatening manner before being shot. The shooting took place less than two minutes after the first deputy arrived. Manzano remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
 
Deputy Medina is a 12-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, and Senior Deputy Tougas is a 31-year veteran. In addition to their extensive training and many years of experience, both deputies have received certification in crisis intervention techniques.
