License Plate Recognition Cameras Lead To Recovery Of A Stolen Vehicle Involved In A San Francisco Burglary.

On Thursday, October 8, 2020, at approximately 4:30 AM, the Sausalito Police Department received an alert from our License Plate Recognition cameras of a stolen vehicle entering Sausalito from Monte Mar Ave. The vehicle, a 2008 Ford, had been stolen from Sunnyvale on October 6, 2020.

Due to the fact that there had been five (5) vehicles stolen from Sausalito in the last three weeks, Officers were already in the area conducting proactive patrol. At approximately 4:32 AM, Sausalito Officers located the Ford in the area of Crecienta Drive and Currey Ave. As Officers approached the Ford, the vehicle fled onto Currey Lane. Currey Lane is a dead end road that abuts northbound Highway 101. Upon reaching the end of Currey Lane, the driver of the Ford abandoned the vehicle and climbed over a chain link fence and ran across northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 101 into heavily wooded open space on the west side of the freeway. The suspect was described as a male wearing a black sweatshirt with a hood and jeans. The Sausalito Police Department, Marin County Sheriff’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol conducted a comprehensive search but was unable to locate the suspect.

Further investigation revealed that the Ford had been the getaway vehicle in a window smash burglary of a jewelry store in San Francisco at approximately 4:20 AM. During the search of the Ford, Officers located jewelry taken in the San Francisco burglary and tools commonly used to commit burglaries.

Since the City of Sausalito’s License Plate Recognition Cameras program became operational on Thursday, May 18, 2017, forty-four (44) stolen vehicles have been recovered and forty-nine (49) individuals have been arrested for various crimes. The goal of the License Plate Recognition Camera program is to increase public safety by utilizing technology to alert law enforcement to wanted vehicles, enhance post-crime investigative abilities, and deter crime by increasing the likelihood of suspect identification.
