Advisory

October 9, 2020 Coronavirus update from Burr-Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 / FLU SHOTS Friday, October 9, 2020 BURR RIDGE IS IN WEST SUBURBAN REGION 8 – “MASK FOR US”

The roller-coaster ride with COVID-19 remains tumultuous and daring – tumultuously tiring and daring us to let our guard down so it can spread, infect, sicken and sometimes kill or permanently debilitate us. Now significantly affecting our lives for an eighth consecutive month, we are continually tempted to become complacent – even resigned – to the presence of COVID and almost willingly give-in to the inevitability of COVID-19 being with us permanently. We must not quit; we cannot let that happen. To give in is to capitulate to a foe that will not be grant mercy. It will do what it does. Keep fighting, keep wearing masks, avoid larger gatherings for long periods, wash hands – and remind others to remain vigilant. Length of exposure to someone with COVID-19 most strongly correlates to one’s risk of becoming infected.

The total case count in Burr Ridge now is 297; up 14 since my October 2 Mayor Message. The Cook side of Burr Ridge has 90 total case, while the DuPage side is at 207. The 14-day Villagewide active case count is 24, which represents one of the lowest figures in weeks. As with recent Messages, the Positivity Rate, Hospital Admissions, and Medical Bed and ICU Bed Availability metrics remain statistically stable for Region 8, which consists of DuPage County and Kane County. Statewide recovery for our Region and the state is still around 96%. The number of new Illinois cases broke 3,000 yesterday; however, there were over 70,000 people tested, while the seven-day positivity rate remains well below 4%. When the state last reported new cases over 3,000 (May 14: 3,200) there were only 22,678 tested – a positivity rate more than 4 times higher. Consider that Wisconsin reported almost 3,000 new cases today with an 18%+ positivity rate, despite having less than half of our population.

The Village’s Economic Development Committee (which I chair) met Wednesday to continue discussion of a potential public-private program of financial assistance and preventative sanitization of all our retail businesses – not just our restaurants. The goal is to be able to attract patrons to Burr Ridge as the safest place to shop and dine in the area. We want to create as much normalcy and confidence for shoppers and diners as the winter inches closer. Today is likely to be the last of our 80-degree days for months to come. All ideas as to how better to cope with winter’s cold and being inside are all welcome.

I noticed the news report about the medicine advisory board of the Illinois High School Association exploring basketball games beginning in November if the players wear masks while playing. No decision has been made. The report noted that in Illinois only “low risk” sports such as tennis, cross-country, swimming, and golf have been allowed this fall, with “higher risk” sports such as boys soccer and football pushed to the spring.

“If you have men (or women) who will only come if they know there is a good road, I don't want them. I want men (and women) who will come if there is no road at all.” – Dr. David Livingstone
