1700 block of Mantelli Drive reopened

Mantelli Drive has been reopened for vehicular and foot traffic as the location has been rendered safe.  The CSI team is still on scene processing evidence.  The Gilroy Police Department, the City of Gilroy, the Gilroy Fire Department, and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad thanks the Gilroy community for all of their support and cooperation during this incident.

**Update October 13, 2020 at 12:30 PM**

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad and Gilroy Police Department’s CSI team are currently processing the scene at 1711 Mantelli Drive, Gilroy.
 
The injured male was determined to be a 53-year-old male that lives at the residence.  The male is currently being treated at an area trauma center.  There were no other injuries.
 
It is still unknown how long the street will be closed while the scene is being processed. 
 
The types of explosives on-scene are still undetermined, but it does not appear to be related to a drug lab.
 
The incident is being investigated by the Gilroy Police Department and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad.  Please contact Gilroy Police Detective Silva if you have any information regarding this incident at 408-846-0335 (GPD case 20-4701).

The 1700 block of Mantelli Drive, between Rancho Hills Drive and Learnard Way will be closed tonight (October 12, 2020) and will likely impact the morning commute.  The street may be closed for multiple days. 

On October 12, 2020, at 2:20 PM, the Gilroy Fire Department responded to the area on the report of an explosion.  It was determined an adult male sustained serious injuries from the explosion and was transported to a local trauma center.  The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad is on scene and investigating the incident. 

We will update this message when we have additional details.
