**UPDATE** #LASD Deputy-Involved Shooting, Intersection of 108th Street and Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting. The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2020, at approximately 4:00 a.m. on 108th Street and Vermont, Los Angeles.

Homicide detectives have learned South Los Angeles Station received a call for service regarding a White female victim being kidnapped at gunpoint from 103rd Street and Figueroa Street, Los Angeles. The suspect forced the victim into his vehicle and fled the location.  A friend of the victim was advised of the kidnapping and saw the suspect’s vehicle and began to follow it to the area of 127th Street and Budlong Avenue.

At 127th Street and Budlong Avenue, the suspect’s vehicle, a silver SUV, stopped, and the suspect exited the vehicle and fired one round at the informant.  The suspect then fired an additional round at another occupied vehicle in the same intersection. The suspect re-entered his vehicle with the victim still inside and fled the location.

Deputies from the South Los Angeles Station were advised regarding the assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping and possible rape.  Deputies searched the area and located the suspect’s vehicle in a Park and Ride parking lot in the 11600 block of Vermont Avenue.

Deputies approached the suspect’s vehicle on foot and saw the windows of the suspect vehicle were fogged to indicate the vehicle was occupied. Deputies observed the victim unclothed in the backseat of the suspect’s vehicle.  The suspect quickly appeared in the driver’s seat and began to drive away.  As the suspect began to accelerate, the unclothed victim managed to escape out of the rear door.  The victim was subsequently rescued by deputies.

The suspect pulled on to northbound Vermont Avenue in an attempt to evade deputies.   Deputies initiated a pursuit  northbound on Vermont Avenue to westbound 108th Street.  The suspect collided into a gate at the end of a cul de sac on 108th Street. The suspect exited the vehicle driver's side door and began to run eastbound when a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect, a Black male adult in his mid-40’s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A firearm was recovered at the scene.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

There is no additional information available at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
