Advisory

October 16, 2020 Coronavirus update from Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 / VIRUS SURGING
Friday, October 16, 2020
BURR RIDGE IS IN WEST SUBURBAN REGION 8 – “MASK FOR US”

The Coronavirus COVID-19 is surging locally, statewide, and nationally. This week, Illinois exceeded 4,000 new cases twice and set a one-day record of new cases and tests today with 4,554 and 87,759, respectively. Even with increased testing, this is a bad milestone to pass. Positivity is up more than one percentage point since last Friday’s message. Region 8’s positivity rate is hit 7% today-one percentage point below the threshold that may bring more closures or restrictions. Only three weeks ago, it was close to 3%. More ominous, there were over 50 deaths reported statewide in one day – also a bad high water mark. Daily hospitalizations are averaging 17. Just a few weeks ago, the average was about 12. Neighboring states are surging too. The positivity rate in Wisconsin hit 20% this week. A second wave was predicted in the fall, and it appears that it may be upon us. All of this is bad news and means we have to stay committed to wearing face coverings often and properly, stay away from gatherings, limit your family gatherings, and follow all the rules to keep others and yourself safe and healthy.

The total case count in Burr Ridge now is 302; up just five since my October 9 Mayor Message. The 14-day active case count since October 9 for the Village overall is 19; which compares very favorably with our neighbors and the state. The Cook County side of Burr Ridge has had 95 total reported cases; DuPage is at 207 with the Village wide trending downward for new cases over the last two weeks.

DuPage distributed its CARES Act relief monies to area communities this past week, with Burr Ridge receiving $356,192. This money will reimburse the Village for purchases related to PPE, cleaning equipment, and small business relief and outdoor tent programs, among other programs. The Village also purchased UV-light air purification machines this week to be installed in our public buildings in the near future, including Village Hall and the Police Station. Free masks will continue to be made available for any Village resident in need; simply stop by Village Hall and staff will provide you with them. Your safety is the first concern of the Board and myself!

Take time this month for a drive around our area to look at fall foliage that is in full display. This socially-distanced activity will bring you a sense of normalcy during this time. Be sure you take a moment to research the candidates on your electoral ballot this November as well; it is our civic duty and privilege to vote.

“As women achieve power, the barriers will fall. As society sees what women can do, as WOMEN see what women can do, there will be more women out there doing things, and we’ll all be better off for it.” - Justice Sandra Day O’Connor
