SUMMARY: On Friday, October 23, 2020, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Deputies from the Yucaipa Police Department responded to a call of a suspicious man in a vehicle with the window broken out. When deputies responded, the man armed himself with a knife taped to his hand and refused commands to drop the weapon. Additional deputies responded and spoke with him. He was not speaking rationally and was believed to be having a mental health episode. The man placed the knife to his throat several times and made concerning statements. Deputies spoke with him for several hours in attempts to keep him calm and peacefully resolve the situation. Deputy Jackson spoke with the man extensively and was later assisted by members of the Sheriff's Negotiator Team. Nearly four and a half hours later, the man complied and dropped the knife. He was taken into custody without injury and transported to Redlands Community Hospital for treatment.
