Flood Preparedness - Tips On How To Be Storm Ready
We can reduce the risk of flooding, downed trees, and electrical interruptions caused by fallen branches with your help. For Flood Preparedness Week (October 17-24), we offer guidance and essential resources to keep your family and home safe in case of a flood.
How can you be storm ready?
- Properly trimming and maintaining street trees on/adjacent to your property (before rainy season).
- Collecting and properly disposing of heavy leaf fall before storms occur. Be sure to fill up the yard waste container first; remaining leaves should be left on the lawn until closer to collection day.
- Do not pile leaves in the gutter before a storm, as this leads to drains becoming clogged and a higher probability of flooding.
- Removing leaves and debris from storm drain inlets with a rake or shovel. Report storm-related hazards to the Maintenance Services Division at (650) 947-2785 during regular business hours. After-hours, weekends, and holidays call the Los Altos Police Department 24/7 non-emergency line at (650) 947-2770.
- Storm-related hazards include street flooding, fallen trees/limbs, plugged storm drains, traffic signal outages, and fallen street signs.
- Use sandbags to protect flood-prone entrances to your home.
- The City of Los Altos offers two complimentary self-serve sandbag stations at the City’s Municipal Services Center (707 Fremont Avenue) in the McKenzie Park parking lot. Sand, shovels, and bags are available 24/7.
