The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning for the East Bay Hills (which includes areas within Alameda County) on Sunday, October 25 at 11 AM through Tuesday, October 27 at 11 AM.  A High Wind Watch has also been issued by the NWS from Sunday, October 25 at 4 PM through Monday, October 26 at 10 AM.
 
A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are happening now or will occur in the near future.  A combination of low relative humidity, warm temperatures and strong winds can contribute to extreme fire behavior.  Dry conditions make for easier fire starts and create potential for the rapid spread of fire.  A High Wind Watch is issued when the following conditions are possible: 1) sustained winds of 40 mph or higher for one hour or more OR 2) wind gusts of 58 mph or higher for any duration.
 
All Fremont Fire Department fire stations remain fully staffed and extra firefighters will be on-duty throughout the Red Flag Warning to increase fire protection in the City of Fremont.  The Fremont Police Department and Public Works Department will also have additional patrol resources and personnel assigned to the extreme weather event.
 
Due to the hazardous weather conditions, PG&E has announced a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) on Sunday night, October 25, through Monday morning, October 26.  The power shutoff plan and schedule is dependent upon weather conditions and patterns.  Certain areas in Fremont, primarily along Vargas Road, Niles Canyon/Palomares and portions of Mill Creek Road, may be impacted.  Based on current weather predictions, it is projected a small number of Fremont residents (less than 1,000) will be impacted by the planned loss of power.

Wildfires won’t wait for you to be ready so please take a moment to prepare ahead for a wildfire and/or an emergency.  Here are a few tips on preventing wildfires and general emergency preparedness:
 
General Wildfire Safety:
-Make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished.
-Avoid activities with open flames or sparks.
-Dial 911 immediately if you see smoke or fire. 
 
Equipment Safety:
-Never mow or trim dry grass on a Red Flag Warning Day. (Mow before 10 AM on a day when it is NOT hot and windy).
-Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation.
-Avoid power equipment that creates sparks.
 
Vehicle Safety:
-Never pull over in dry grass.
-Make sure your vehicle is maintained, with nothing dragging on the ground.
-Check tire pressure to ensure the proper pressure is maintained and you’re not driving on exposed wheel rims that will throw sparks.
 
General Emergency Preparedness:
-Have an emergency bag or an emergency supply kit nearby.
-Have an emergency plan/evacuation plan ready.
-Charge your cell phone(s) and mobile devices.
-Have a flashlight and extra batteries in a location that is easily accessible.
