RED FLAG WARNING (FIRE DANGER) THIS WEEKEND
The Oakley Police Department wishes to inform, and warn, the residents of Oakley of a Red Flag warning occurring this weekend from Sunday afternoon (10-25-20) through mid day Monday (10-26-20). According to the National Weather Service Sunday will bring a high of near 69 degrees to Oakley with north northwest wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. As we go into the night we can expect mostly clear conditions, with a low of around 50 degrees. The winds will become a north wind at 20 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 44 mph.
In addition to the windy conditions we are also experiencing very low humidity and according to experts our vegetation is the driest it has been since it has been a recorded statistic (nearly 100 years). These factors add to the danger of fire.
Over the past four years the Oakley Police Department has deployed to the Santa Rosa and Napa fires, as well as our local Summerlake Community experience last year. Fire victims/survivors have consistently reported to us from the time they knew they were in danger to the time they knew they had to vacate thier homes was only five minutes.
The Oakley Police Department recommends pre-staging bags containing enough clothing, medicine and other essentials to last each member in the household for three days just in case an emergency strikes our area. When your essentials are staged and ready it buys you time to focus on pets, important papers and necessary electronics etc... The goal should be to develop supplies and a routine that allows every member of your household to be out of the house in five minutes.
The Oakley Police Dpartment will be paying extra attention to areas impacted by high winds, vegetation and power lines this weekend. The Oakley Police Department also urges safety and preparedness for all of our residents.
