South Los Angeles Sheriff Deputy Assaulted (On Duty) During a Traffic Stop
On Sunday, October 25, 2020 at approximately 0200 hours, deputies assigned to South Los Angeles Station, while on patrol, conducted a traffic stop of a Female, Black, Adult driver at 97th Street and Vermont Avenue in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles.
During the traffic stop, the suspect grabbed the female deputy (who was conducting the investigation) by the arm and sped off North bound on Vermont Avenue, dragging her approximately ten blocks, until she was able to free herself in the vicinity of 89th Street and Vermont Avenue.
South Los Angeles patrol units immediately responded to assist and went into a vehicle pursuit of the suspect. The vehicle pursuit ended in the vicinity of Florence Avenue and Western Avenue, in Los Angeles.
The female suspect exited her vehicle and attempted to flee. While deputy personnel were attempting to take the suspect into custody, one of the assisting deputies accidentally discharged his firearm.
No one was injured or struck by the stray bullet.
The suspect was taken into custody without any further incident.
The injured deputy was taken to the local hospital to be treated for her non-life threatening injuries. She was later released from the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing.
