October -National Cyber Security Awareness Month
Do Your Part. #Be CyberSmart

School, work and socializing have significantly moved online this year and we would like to remind our community members to be diligent in protecting digital devices and staying away from cybercriminals.
In 2019 more than $3.5 billion was lost globally to cybercrime; while 7 million data records are compromised daily? The FBI considered the premier cyber investigative agency continues to work hard to keep us protected, but they need each of us to be smart when navigating on line.

Reduce cybersecurity risks:
1. Resist the urge to click on interesting links. Links that pop up may have malicious intent. If you are curious, type the address into your browser, but do not click on the link.
2. Do not provide account numbers, passwords or Social Security numbers to pop up ads. If an unexpected email arrives requesting such information – contact the entity requiring this information to determine legitimacy of the email request.
3. As people spend an increasing amount of time on the internet; remember—every picture you post, and status you update; you are sharing information about yourself (who you are and where you are) with the world.
4. Security breaches, stolen data and identity thefts have become common occurrences – using multi-factor (strong) or two-factor authentication will better secure your online information & identity. Log in would require both a password and one time use code.
5. Strong passwords (long and complex) are essential in protecting your personal information.

Protect your computer:
1. Keep your firewall turned on
2. Install or update anti-virus software
3. Install or Update Antispyware Technology
4. Keep Operating Systems up to date
5. Be careful what you download
6. Turn off your computer – when not in use

Protect your Children from Online Predators:
1. Have open, ongoing conversations on what you expect regarding online behavior
2. Remind them that “Don’t talk to strangers” is as important on the internet.
3. Make sure their privacy settings restrict access to their online profiles.
4. Make it a known rule that they will never arrange to face to face meet someone they have met on line without your knowledge or supervision.
5. Educate yourself about the websites, software, games and apps your children are using. Know they are constantly changing.
6. Periodically check their social media and gaming profiles and posts.
7. Review their screen names, making sure they are appropriate.
8. Teach them the importance of strong passwords.
9. Impress upon them that once a comment or image is posted, it can be shared by many and it never truly disappears.
10. Report any inappropriate comments or contact to Northfield Twp Police.
