PLAN FOR A SAFE HALLOWEEN
As families are planning for the upcoming holiday season beginning with Halloween; the men and women at the Covina Police Department urge everyone to be safe. We understand the stress caused by COVID-19 and unfortunately have experienced and witnessed it firsthand. Some in our community have lost family members and friends while others lost their jobs or businesses. The men and women at Covina PD empathize with everyone affected. As we approach Halloween 2020; we urge everyone to be smart, patient, and safe. Since some of the traditional ways in which Halloween is celebrated does not allow you to minimize contact with non-household members, it is important to plan early and identify safer alternatives. We know there will be gatherings and parties despite the orders issued by public health officials. We also know the bars remain closed while restaurants are open with specific operational guidelines. Refer to the California Department of Public Health guidance for safer Halloween Celebrations during COVID-19. https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/Guidance-for-Safer-Halloween-and-Dia-de-los-Muertos-Celebrations-during-COVID-19.aspx
The fact is our officers continue to work in a pandemic protecting our community responsibly while pursuing crime relentlessly. Staffing levels on Halloween will be appropriate; however, response times to calls for service will be affected. More fireworks, public intoxication, loud parties, and traffic related issues will be keeping us busy. We remain vigilant and committed but can’t be everywhere at once. Calls for service will be prioritized and we urge personal responsibility and common sense. If you see something; say something and if it does NOT require an immediate response; use CRIME STOPPERS at 800-222-TIPS.
Keep these tips in mind if you are driving or out walking:
- The days are getting shorter. Be visible and carry a flashlight or reflective vest if you are out at dusk or at night so drivers can see you.
- Stick to familiar, well-lit routes.
- Only cross the street at crosswalks or corners where it is safe. Always look left, right, then left again before crossing.
- If you are doing car-based tours of decorations, be extra alert for other vehicles backing out of driveways or leaving parking spaces.
- Watch for pedestrians and yield to them at all crosswalks.
- It is important to keep traffic safety in mind and designate a non-drinking driver.
Very respectfully,
Chief John Curley
