Successful Collaboration between Bayfair Center and SLPD thwarts Potential Criminal Activity
On November 3rd, the San Leandro Police Department received information regarding the possibility of criminal activity occurring at the Bayfair Shopping Center later that evening. The activity, described as “Bayfair Mall Loot” on social media outlets, was distinct in nature from a peaceful protest and believed to be related to similar criminal activity that occurred in San Leandro on May 31, 2020.
In response to this information, the San Leandro Police Department worked with Bayfair Center staff to develop a plan that would minimize property damage and personal injuries caused by this type of unrest. Bayfair Center closed early and limited access onto their property for the remainder of the night. The San Leandro Police Department assigned extra officers around the Bayfair Center and other retail shopping centers in visible patrols.
At about 7:00 in the evening, SLPD Officers began to see multiple groups, with each group containing 20 -30 juveniles and young adults, arrive to the Bayfair Center area. Officers quickly responded and were able to peacefully disperse the groups without incident. These groups attempted to enter Bayfair Center property, but activity subsided after approximately three hours and officers were able to leave the area. “Our priority is community safety, and we are grateful this did not escalate further,” said Lt. Ted Henderson. “Thankfully, no arrests were made, no citations were issued, and no uses of force were reported,” Lt. Henderson added.
