Crime Alert Bulletin for the week of October 25-November 1, 2020

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Wednesday, 10-28-20 at approximately 11:23 a.m., officers were dispatched to a disturbance call at the Metro PCS store on Mission Street. The employee reported that a customer was upset over a broken phone and threatened to go to his car to get a gun if he did not get a refund. Officers contacted a subject matching the description, and the subject denied the allegations. The subject was captured on video walking behind the register and threatening an employee. The subject, a 44-year old Oakland resident, was cited for criminal threats and battery

On Wednesday, 10-28-20 at 3:50 p.m., a 62-year old San Mateo resident and her husband parked their 2003 Mitsubishi Montero at the Pacific Supermarket parking lot. The victim realized she left the keys in her ignition and said she saw two females get into her vehicle, preparing to drive out of the parking lot. The victim said she ran to the front of her vehicle and yelled at the driver, but she said the driver sped off—nearly hitting her. The vehicle is still outstanding.

On Wednesday, 10-28-20 at approximately 11:29 p.m., a 21-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after being involved in a collision on Pierce Street near Bryant Street.

On Thursday, 10-29-20 at approximately 3:00 p.m., a 78-year old Colma resident said she was in the parking lot of Walgreen’s on San Pedro Road getting into her vehicle when she noticed a white vehicle park next to her in the next stall. The victim said a Middle Eastern female in her 50’s wearing a long green dress approached her and put a gold necklace around her neck. The female knew some Tagalog and then asked to see the gold ring that was on her finger. The victim said she took her ring off and gave it to the female. The victim said the female then gave her a handful of gold jewelry that was wrapped in a tissue. The victim looked through the jewelry and saw three Rolex watches, five gold rings and two necklaces. The female asked for $2,000 for the jewelry. The victim said she did not have the money with her, but that she could get it at home. The victim drove to her residence, and the female, along with two Middle Eastern men, followed her in their white vehicle and waited in front of her residence. The victim said she handed the female the $2,000. Later in the evening, the victim was looking at the watches and noticed she couldn’t set the time. The victim thinks she was probably a victim of a scam. This investigation is continuing.

On Friday, 10-30-20 at approximately 3:00 a.m., subsequent to a traffic stop by Officer Leyson, a 28-year old San Jose resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content over .08%. This occurred at the intersection of Winchester Street and Crocker Avenue.

On Saturday, 10-31-20 at approximately 10:00 a.m., Officer Dolan was dispatched to the area of Washington Street and Sullivan Avenue on a report of a subject displaying “erratic behavior” who was wandering in and out of traffic. The reporting party said the subject may have taken a duffel bag from a black Jeep. When Officer Dolan arrived, he said the subject saw him and tried to run away from him, attempting to climb a fence. Officer Dolan apprehended the subject, a 29-year old San Francisco resident, who is a convicted felon on federal probation for weapons violations. The subject was arrested for having an unregistered firearm, ammunition and methamphetamine in his possession. Officers found the duffel bag and its contents belonging to the “victim” nearby. The duffel bag contained 56 Adderall pills, 43 Alprazolam pills, 2 grams of cocaine 45 capsules of MDMA, 22 grams of ketamine, and $610 in U.S Currency. Officers then placed the once- “victim”, a 30-year old Daly City resident, under arrest for possession of a controlled substance for sale and for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. Coincidentally, for several weeks, our Crime Suppression Unit had been surveilling the residence (where the Jeep was parked) for drug dealing. Our Task Force officer authored a search warrant to search the suspect’s motorhome which was parked in the backyard of the residence. Later that afternoon, officers served the search warrant on the motorhome and seized 110 ounces of MDMA, 782 grams of Adderall pills, 356 grams of Alprazolam, 49 ounces of Ketamine, 50 grams of cocaine, packaging materials, a weigh scale, two firearms, boxes of ammunition, 3 cell phones, 2 laptops and $7,000 in U.S Currency. The once-“victim” was additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance for sale, possession of a controlled substance while armed, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possess/sell a controlled substance and keeping a place to sell a controlled substance.

On Saturday, 10-31-20 at approximately 10:27 p.m., a 38-year old male Daly City resident was the victim of an attempted murder by a 26-year old female at the St. Francis Square parking lot. The victim sustained several lacerations from being stabbed by the suspect. The suspect was later arrested at her home in San Francisco.

On Sunday, 11-01-20 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Officer Dolan responded to an apartment building on the 400 block of A Street on a report of a suspicious subject who had broken into the garage area. Sgt. Hussain and Officer Dolan arrived to see a subject with a power tool in his hand who was preparing to cut through a bike lock next to a bike rack. The subject admitted to “being up to no good”. Officer Shiu responded to take over the investigation, and the subject, a 31-year old San Jose resident, was arrested for burglary, possession of burglary tools, and possession of a controlled substance.

On Sunday, 11-01-20 at 11:24 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Irvington Street and Evergreen Avenue on a report of two subjects illegally dumping furniture. Officer Abuan saw two loveseat-style couches at the corner, and he said a citizen flagged him down. Officer Ciucci and Officer Reyes arrived, and they followed the drag marks from the location of the furniture to a residence on the 300 block of Irvington Street. They contacted the resident, and she admitted to dumping the couches but said they were left by a random person at her driveway the previous day. Officer Reyes asked the subject if the video camera pointed at her house from across the street would match the statement she provided, and the resident became hesitant and did not want to discuss it. Officer Abuan cited the 23-year old resident for illegal dumping, and the resident and her mother moved the furniture back to their residence.

The victim said the caller said his identity had been stolen, and his name was being used on 18 fraudulent bank accounts in Columbia and various places around the world. The victim said the caller said he needed to cooperate with the investigation, or they would send the local sheriff to his house. The victim said he received another call, and our Police Department telephone number appeared on the caller I.D. The victim said the caller identified himself as “Carlos Bolanos” from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department and threatened to put a case against him if he didn’t cooperate. The victim said he was instructed to close his bank accounts and withdraw all of his money. The victim said the caller instructed him to purchase Target gift cards totaling $2,500 and to give him the numbers. The victim later realized he had been scammed, and when he phoned Target to tell them what happened, the representative said the money was already spent. **This type of scam is the same thing as the “IRS” or “Social Security” scams. Please don’t fall prey to them.
