Fatal Vehicle/Pedestrian Traffic Collision

On November 6th, about 4:40AM, the San Leandro Police Department responded to a vehicle/pedestrian traffic collision near the intersection of 145th Avenue and East 14th Street.

The preliminary investigation revealed a motorist was driving north in the 14500 block of East 14th Street within the posted speed limit. Suddenly, and without warning, a 20-30-year-old unidentified Hispanic man walked into the street, mid-block, and outside of any pedestrian crosswalks. The motorist, who did not see the man walk into the street, struck the man who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The San Leandro Police Department’s Traffic Division responded to further investigate the collision. At this time, it does not appear that speed and/or alcohol were factors in the collision. However, it is not known why the unidentified man suddenly walked out into the street. The driver, whose name is not being released, remained on scene and cooperated with officers. The driver did not display any signs of intoxication and there was nothing observed that indicated this was an intentional act.

East 14th Street between 143rd Avenue and 146th Avenue was closed to traffic for about an hour while this collision was investigated. That area has since been reopened to normal traffic.
