LICENSE PLATE RECOGNITION CAMERA HIT RESULTS IN ARREST FOR POSSESSION OF A STOLEN VEHICLE AND NARCOTICS PARAPHERNALIA
On Saturday, November 7, 2020, at approximately 2:15 PM, the Sausalito Police Department was advised that the California Highway Patrol had received a Low Jack stolen vehicle hit on a Toyota truck that had just exited Highway 101 at the Alexander offramp. Shortly after receiving the information from the California Highway Patrol, the Sausalito Police Department received an alert from our License Plate Recognition Cameras of a stolen 2013 Toyota Tacoma entering Sausalito from Alexander Ave. The Toyota had been reported stolen out of San Rafael on November 6, 2020.
Sausalito Police Officers immediately responded and conducted a comprehensive search of the area. Officer Sean Smagalski located the Toyota and a traffic stop was affected at the intersection of Bridgeway and Caledonia. Officers removed and detained the driver, Patricia Friley (30-year-old resident of Novato) without incident. A search of Friley revealed that she was in possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
Further investigation revealed that Friley reportedly had fled the scene of a traffic collision she was involved in shortly after exiting Highway 101. The California Highway Patrol is conducting the collision investigation.
Friley was arrested and booked into the Marin County Jail for vehicle theft and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
Since the City of Sausalito’s License Plate Recognition Camera program became operational on Thursday, May 18, 2017, forty-seven (47) stolen vehicles have been recovered and fifty-four (54) individuals have been arrested for various crimes. The goal of the License Plate Recognition Camera program is to increase public safety by utilizing technology to alert Law Enforcement to wanted vehicles, enhance post-crime investigative abilities, and deter crime by increasing the likelihood of suspect identification.
