Advisory

November 11, 2020 Coronavirus update from Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 /
Wednesday, November 11, 2020 – Veterans Day
NEW TIER 2 RESTRICTIONS APPLY IN DUPAGE COUNTY

COVID-19 is relentless, indiscriminate, and now surging locally, statewide, and nationally. Total COVID-19 cases in Burr Ridge as of November 10 is 412 with 293 (DuPage) and 119 (Cook) sides. According to the DuPage County Board of Health, outbreaks in congregate living and long term care facilities represent less than 15% of our total COVID-19 cases among DuPage County residents, with the remainder originating in community spread with no identified or reported link or association. I have no similar stats for the Cook side. In adherence to HIPPA laws, the Village is not made aware of the location or identity of those who test positive for COVID-19. Click here for the DuPage County COVID dashboard and here for Cook County.

This continuing surge, now into a third month, is a reflection of ongoing high levels of community activity that increases risk of transmission in various settings, such as in-person gatherings and shared meals with family/friends, workplaces, and long-term care facilities. All health boards coping with COVID-19 are discouraging all such gatherings – especially for Thanksgiving, which this year is on November 26. The relationship between underlying medical conditions – and age – remains stunningly high. If you have underlying conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart or lung disease, or asthma please be very careful not matter your age – if you have any significant underlying conditions and are over age 60 – be extraordinarily careful. Wear a secure, well-layered mask every time you go out in public, even if you happen to be alone.

Burr Ridge straddles Region 8 (DuPage and Kane Counties) and Region 10 (Cook County). Since my last Mayor’s Message, I have been receiving daily updates regarding all COVID metrics. Each day, I look for signs that the virus is easing – it is not. In the last week, Illinois is recording daily new cases as high as 12,623 (November 10). Even with testing averaging nearly 100,000 per day, positivity rates are rapidly increasing. Positivity in region 8 is now 14.7% on a 7-day rolling average; in Region 10, it is 13.2%. I closely monitor the med surg. and ICU beds – and deaths. In percentage of availability in Region 8, med surg. beds are at 21% while ICU beds at 35%, both trending negatively – which is not good. The statewide number of deaths has increased 25% in the last 14 days. Hospital bed usage and deaths lag behind the number of new cases by a few weeks, and such evidence is now readily observable. Please remain vigilant – this is a marathon.

It is Veterans Day. A day America has set to honor all those who have served our country in war or peace. It was Armistice Day initially – when the powers signed the truce ending WWI on November 11, 1918. I tip the Village hat to Jack Schaus – one of our great veterans who joined God’s forces this week; God’s gain – our loss. Here’s to those who wore the uniform to protect us:

“We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was. Most of all, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause." -- Ronald Reagan
