#LASD Homicide Bureau Investigating Off-Duty Deputy Assaulted with a Deadly Weapon & DIS in unincorp Los Angeles
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau Investigators responded to an assault with a deadly weapon, off-duty deputy involved shooting investigation. The incident occurred Sunday, November 15, 2020, at approximately, 2:25 a.m., on the 800 block of North Hazard Avenue in the unincorporated area Los Angeles.
Detectives have learned that an off-duty deputy was driving in the area when he was approached by a male Hispanic approximately 20 years-old. The suspect produced a handgun and fired at the deputy while he was seated in his vehicle, and the deputy returned fire.
The deputy was struck one time in a lower extremity, and self-transported to a local hospital to be treated for his non-life threatening gunshot wound.
The suspect is still outstanding at this time and it is unknown if he was struck by gunfire. He was wearing a red sweatshirt and black shorts. He fled the scene on foot.
The off-duty deputy was in the driver seat of the vehicle when the incident occurred. There were two other passengers in the deputy’s vehicle that were not injured.
Investigators are canvassing the area for any witnesses and surveillance video footage that may have captured the incident.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted. Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee. Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
