City Announces Office Closures in Response to Community-Wide Spread of COVID-19, MDHHS Emergency Order

EAST LANSING, Mich. — In light of the community-wide spread of COVID-19 and the latest emergency order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), the majority of City of East Lansing offices will be closed to the public for three weeks beginning Wednesday, Nov. 18 in the interest of community and employee health.

All essential services (police, fire, EMS, curbside trash/recycling services, water services, wastewater management and court services) will remain available and non-essential staff will be available remotely to assist residents with non-essential services. For a list of City phone numbers, online payment options and additional departmental service information, visit www.cityofeastlansing.com/coronavirus. The departmental service information is available in the City’s Continuity of Operations Plan, which will continue to be updated over the coming days with additional information.

Offices that will be closed to the public for in-person transactions during the three-week period include East Lansing City Hall, the East Lansing Department of Public Works (DPW), East Lansing Prime Time and the East Lansing 54B District Court. The DPW 24/7 recycling drop-off site will also be closing at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 18, with a re-opening to be announced at a later date.

The East Lansing Police Department’s 24/7 police desk, 409 Park Lane, will remain staffed and open to the public during the office closures. The East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC) will also remain open for limited hours to continue offering its childcare program as well as fitness center and pool visits on a reservation-basis only. All other programming at ELHCC will be suspended. Additional ELHCC details will be posted soon in the City’s Continuity of Operations Plan.

The East Lansing Public Library will be rolling back services beginning Friday, Nov. 20 (through Wednesday, Dec. 9). While the library will not be open to the public during this time, curbside pick-up services and the 24/7 outside lockers for hold pickups will continue to be offered. Learn more about these services at www.elpl.org.

While the City’s office closures will be in place for an initial three weeks, there is a possibility that they will be extended based on the status of COVID-19 cases in the local area and current public health directives. Administrative and emergency management staff will continue to actively monitor, plan and communicate about this situation in the coming weeks.
