Advisory

November 17, 2020 Coronavirus update from Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19/
Tuesday, November 17, 2020
NEW “TIER 3” ADVISORY RESTRICTIONS ISSUED / “MASK FOR US”

Governor Pritzker today announced new statewide COVID-19 advisory restrictions due to the persistent surge of the coronavirus effective Friday, November 20. The new restrictions are built upon the Resurgence Mitigation Plan released in July to suppress the spread of the virus and ensure hospitals did not become overrun. Labeled as Tier 3 Resurgence Mitigations, the new protocols push businesses to let employees work from home, limit how many people can be inside stores and advise against non-family in-home gatherings. They prohibit indoor or bar service at restaurants with no tables exceeding six people. Health and fitness facilities are to limit access to 25% of capacity.

I, with many DuPage County mayors and managers, listened to the professional staff of the DuPage County Board of Health provide a weekly update on Monday the community about the relentless onslaught of COVID-19 upon our area and state of Illinois. It was not an uplifting discussion, until we discussed vaccines. Phrases such as “out of control” and “nationwide” were heard about the virus resurgence. Recovery rates exceed 96% but concern remains as to the long-term effects of COVID-19. The six DuPage hospitals are keeping up with new hospitalizations, but there is concern this cannot last. The positivity rates, med surg. / ICU bed capacities, and deaths are all alarming when compared to a few months ago. Despite most peoples’ best efforts, and unswerving and diligent actions of our front-line medical professionals, we are losing the recent battles. As for vaccines, Pfizer claims its vaccine is over 90% effective while Moderna claims its vaccines is over 95% effective. All Boards of Health are creating plans to efficiently give and distribute the vaccines when available for mass consumption – probably springtime at the earliest.

This continuing surge, now into a third month, is a reflection of persistent high levels of community activity that increases risk of transmission, such as in-person gatherings and shared meals with family/friends, workplaces, and long-term care facilities. All health boards are discouraging all such gatherings – especially for Thanksgiving, which this year is on November 26. The relationship between underlying medical conditions – and age – remains stunningly high. If you have underlying conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart or lung disease, or asthma please be very careful not matter your age – if you have any significant underlying conditions and are over age 60 – be extraordinarily careful. Wear a secure, well-layered mask every time you go out in public, even if you happen to be alone. Total COVID-19 cases in Burr Ridge as of November 17 is 462, with 320 (DuPage) and 142 (Cook) sides and up 41 new cases since November 10. The Village is not made aware of the location or identity of those who test positive for COVID-19. Click here for the DuPage County COVID dashboard and here for Cook County.

On an economic development note, the Subway at County Line Square has permanently closed. We wish the former owners all the best in their future endeavors, while the Village will begin to search for a tenant that will become a new asset for the community.
