San Leandro Police Seeing Rise in Illegal Gun Possession

On November 15th, 2020, a San Leandro Police Officer conducted a traffic stop in the area of E.14th Street and Belleview Drive. The suspect, 25-year-old Toby Anthony of Oakland, was contacted as he sat in the driver seat of a 2007 Kia Amanti. While speaking with Mr. Anthony, an officer noticed a large amount of unsealed marijuana in plain view and a toddler seated in the vehicle. A loaded firearm was recovered on the rear driver-side floorboard underneath the marijuana during a probable cause search of the car. Additionally, Mr. Anthony was in possession of controlled substances that required a physician’s prescription. The toddler was later released to the care of a family member.

Subsequently, this case was reviewed by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, and Mr. Anthony was formally charged with crimes of illegal possession of a firearm and narcotics.

The San Leandro Police Department has seen an increase in firearm-related recoveries. Officers recovered 13 guns in the month of October, and Mr. Anthony’s arrest is the fourth gun recovered this month.

The first photograph was the firearm recovered during Mr. Anthony's arrest.

The additional photographs are two handguns and one assault-rifle recovered during the month of October.
