Recent Scams

Three of our residents have recently fallen victim to telephone and internet scams where they lost $14,700. On November 6th, an elderly Mount Gretna Borough man reported losing $8,000 through an internet scam. Also on November 6th, an elderly Cornwall Borough woman reported losing $2,000. The scammer attempted to convince the woman to obtain another $13,000 but when she went to withdraw the funds her bank expressed concern that she was the victim of a scam. On November 12th, a Cornwall woman reporting being scammed out of $4,500 earlier that day when she wire transferred the money believing her grandson had been arrested in Florida.
These are just the most recent incidents where residents have lost money. In some cases the amounts lost have been in the tens of thousands of dollars; in one instance an elderly West Cornwall Township woman lost at least $189,000 that her family could account for.
ANY TIME YOU ARE TOLD IN A TELEPHONE CALL OR ON THE INTERNET TO PURCHASE GIFT CARDS, MONEY CARDS, OR WIRE TRANSFER MONEY.....IT IS A SCAM! If you are worried about the legitimate nature of such a call or internet message, call the police department before you do anything else.
