Media Release-2 Arrests made for Attempted Grand Theft
Media Release
On November 19, 2020, at approximately 5 am, Mill Valley Police officers were alerted to a theft in progress on Bayview Ave. near downtown Mill Valley. Two subjects were reported underneath a parked vehicle and attempting to remove vehicle parts. The reporting citizen witnessed the crime in progress, and provided a good description to police dispatch.
Deputies from Marin County Sheriff’s spotted the vehicle minutes after the reported crime traveling northbound on Highway 101. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle near Interstate 580 and Bellam Blvd in San Rafael. The Mill Valley Police Department arrived to assist and investigate the case further.
During the search for the suspect vehicle, Sgt. David Kollerer stopped what he believed was a similar automobile within a minute of the original 911 report, in the 900 block of E. Blithedale Ave. It was determined this was not the suspect vehicle. However, twoof those occupants were arrested on unrelated outstanding felony warrant charges. Any potential link between the two separate vehicles is still being investigated.
The vehicle stopped in San Rafael was an exact match on the suspect vehicle reported by the resident in Mill Valley. The occupants were taken in to custody, and the investigation continued.
There were many items of evidence seized from the vehicle including tools suspected to be used in the theft of automotive parts. Catalytic converters, an emissions device installed on most automobiles, have been frequently targeted by thieves at night in Mill Valley. The Mill Valley Police Department appreciates assistance from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, and the help ofour concerned citizens reporting crimes in a timely manner, and making possible a successful apprehension.
