9-1-1 PRESS RELEASE - Internet based phone 911 routing issues
In times of an emergency many people rely on 911 to provide them with the assistance that they need. The first 9-1-1 call was placed in 1968. As technology evolved and wireless services became available, E9-1-1(Enhanced 9-1-1) was created.
E9-1-1 sends 9-1-1 callers to a PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point). The PSAP receives information from the caller such as their phone number and location. The location information that the PSAP received depends on the type of device that is used to call 9-1-1. If the caller is calling from a cell phone, the 9-1-1 dispatcher will only see the address of the cell phone tower the call “pings” from. If the caller is calling from a landline or house phone and the phone line is hard wired, the 9-1-1 dispatcher will see the exact address that the caller is calling from. If the caller is calling from an internet-based house phone, the 91-1- dispatcher will also see the exact location of where the caller is calling from ONLY if the internet provider has the ESN number set up to correctly go to the appropriate PSAP.
Recently, it was discovered that two residents in the community had to call 9-1-1 and their call went to an outside agency. These residents both use an internet connection for their home phone.
