“MASK FOR US” – HAPPY THANKSGIVING ‘20

I can give you some encouraging news as we enter the holiday season: the trend in the number of new cases and the positivity rate has started to trend back downward. The positivity rate in Region 8 (DuPage and Kane counties) has fallen from 15.6% to 14.5% on a 7-day rolling average in the past week, being slightly lower in DuPage than in Kane. Hospitalizations are trending down as well. Deaths are down – but we have to get to zero in that category. Not so encouraging are the med-surg. (16.6%) and ICU bed (19.3%) availability in Region 8. In Cook, the positivity has fallen to 14.8% over a 7-day rolling average, down from 16% a week ago. Total COVID-19 cases in Burr Ridge as of November 24 is 518, with 367 (DuPage) and 151 (Cook) sides, up 56 new cases since November 17. The DuPage Board of Health officials, on the weekly DuPage mayors call, again stressed a subdued Thanksgiving. Despite most peoples’ best efforts here, nationwide and in most countries, we have not corralled the spread of the virus. A third vaccine, this one from AstraZeneca, is on the horizon. All claim to be vastly effective. It appears each of us will need two injections of the same vaccine-rather a daunting task. All Boards of Health are creating plans to efficiently give and distribute the vaccines when they become available for mass consumption in the next 3-6 months. Those plans will be coordinated with area mayors to assure comprehensive administration of vaccines in our communities.

The relationship between underlying medical conditions – and age – remains highly correlated. If you have underlying conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart or lung disease, or asthma please be very careful no matter your age – if you have any significant underlying conditions and are over age 60 – be extraordinarily careful. Wear a secure, well-layered mask every time you go out in public, even if you happen to be alone.

It is Thanksgiving – we have been through a most unusual year of health and national politics. Nonetheless, we remain the greatest country in the world, a place still where people elsewhere wake up and wish they were here. Let us be thankful for all we have – especially our families. Raise a glass of your favorite beverage tomorrow, look around your smaller gathered table and at your virtual attendees, smile and toast them all. On October 3, 1863, expressing gratitude for a pivotal Union Army victory at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln announced that the nation would celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday - on November 26, 1863; 157 years ago tomorrow. We were a nation then divided too, literally at war within our borders. Here are some of his words to be remembered tomorrow:

“They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.” – Abraham Lincoln
