Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 11-23-20 at approximately 3:30 p.m., Officer Haas was dispatched to the parking lot of Original Joe’s of Westlake on a report of a man driving recklessly, revving the engine of his vehicle, and was also reported as falling asleep behind the wheel. Dispatchers advised the vehicle had left the parking lot and was going toward Westlake but then went back to the restaurant parking lot. Officer Haas and Officer Hightower arrived to see the vehicle was parked in front of the restaurant, blocking the entrance and causing a back-up of cars behind him. The driver, a 53-year old San Francisco resident, had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person and was incapable of stepping out of his vehicle, due to his intoxication. After he was out of the vehicle, the driver was unable to complete the field sobriety tests. Officer Haas placed him under arrest for driving under the influence.

On Thursday, 11-26-20 at approximately 8:19 p.m., a 40-year old male was struck by a possible 2011-2014 Toyota Sienna minivan with damage on the front passenger side of the vehicle. The passenger side headlight was broken as a result of the collision. After the collision, the suspect vehicle briefly swerved towards oncoming traffic and nearly struck a vehicle traveling the opposite direction. This occurred on Geneva Avenue, just west of Bayshore Boulevard. The suspect vehicle did not stop, and the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators are currently working on the case.

On Friday, 11-27-20 at 10:31 p.m., Officer Jackson-Berrios was dispatched to the Serramonte Shopping Center on a report of a just-occurred robbery. The officer contacted the victim, a 20-year old Daly City resident, who said he was dropped off by a ride share in the area of Crunch Fitness when he was walking on the sidewalk towards Classy Nails. The victim said a black truck occupied by approximately five or six Hispanic pulled up to him, and the front passenger asked if he knew his way around the area. The victim said he gave directions, and the occupants of the truck began yelling insults at him. The victim said he walked towards the vehicle and challenged the group by telling them to get out of the car. The victim could not recall how many people got out of the truck, but he said several people got out, swarmed him, kicked and punched him. The victim believed he was hit approximately 15 times. He said the subjects got back into the truck and left the area. The victim’s cellphone fell out of his pocket during the incident, and he could not find it. He also suffered from abrasions to his face and hands, a loose tooth, and pain to his elbow. The victim described the main suspect as a Hispanic male in his approximate 20’s, 6’0”, short wavy black hair, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants. This case is under investigation.

On Saturday, 11-28-20 at 6:10 p.m., Officer Shiu and Officer Luis were dispatched to the Westlake Shopping Center on a report of shoplifters at DSW Shoes. The manager pointed to a vehicle and said the shoplifters concealed items and entered a nearby vehicle. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, and the vehicle took off recklessly at a high rate of speed. The vehicle failed to yield, and the officers did not pursue the vehicle, due to the risk of public safety. Officer Luis said as he was driving back to DSW, a person in another vehicle stuck an arm out of the window and pointed towards the Westlake Apartments on Poncetta Drive. The DSW employee said she saw subjects in the store, and she asked the male if he was all set to check out. The reporting party said she stepped away and called 911, as she recognized the female from previous thefts in the store, as well as other DSW stores within the Bay Area to Sacramento. The reporting party said the two subjects started placing items—leggings and handbags—into a bag and walked out of the store. Officer Shiu relayed the information to the officers in the Crime Suppression Unit, and they found the vehicle, along with the male—a 15-year old Citrus Heights resident. The merchandise, totaling over $6,300, was recovered. Officer Luis cited the juvenile and released him to the custody of his grandmother. This case is still being investigated in order to identify the other suspect.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
