A fatal traffic collision occurred on December 15th at Highway 18 and Rancherias Road in the Town of Apple Valley

DATE/TIME: December 15, 2020 / 12:10 am

INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision

LOCATION: State Highway 18 / Rancherias Road, Town of Apple Valley

INVOLVED PARTY (1): 55-year-old Asian male adult, resident of Apple Valley, pedestrian

INVOLVED PARTY (2): 60-year-old White male adult, driving a white 2020 Freightliner Cascadia with double trailers

INVOLVED PARTY (3): 53-year-old White male adult, driving a silver 2001 Ford Mustang


SUMMARY: On December 15, 2020, at about 0013 hours, deputies from the Apple Valley Station and emergency personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a traffic collision involving a pedestrian and two vehicles in the area of State Highway 18 east of Rancherias Road in the Town of Apple Valley.

Through preliminary investigation, it was determined a pedestrian was standing in the eastbound lanes of State Highway 18 east of Rancherias Road. The white Freightliner semi-truck with attached trailers was traveling eastbound on State Highway 18. The semi-truck is believed to have partially struck the pedestrian knocking him to the ground. A Ford Mustang was also traveling eastbound on State Highway 18, a short distance behind the semi-truck. The Mustang also struck the pedestrian. A San Bernardino County Fire Department firetruck was driving in the area and immediately stopped to render aid to the pedestrian. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. All involved parties remained at the scene of the collision and contacted law enforcement.

Investigators from the Apple Valley Station Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded and conducted the investigation. The collision is still under investigation, and deputies are seeking additional witnesses. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is urged to contact Deputy C.
