Advisory

DECEMBER 22ND CART DISTRIBUTION UPDATE-DPW WILL DELIVER CARTS FROM THIS POINT ON

The cart distribution service has conlcluded their work and the bulk of the nearly 5,000 garbage and recycling carts are in circulation in the Borough.  The Department of Public Works will be taking care of any persisting missed deliveries from this point on.  If you have not yet received your carts and have not yet been notified that the Department of Public Works will be delivering your carts tomorrow, please email [email protected] and indicate your address, and how many/what type of carts you are short (or if you have too many)-ie: "123 East Washington Avenue-need one garbage cart and one recycling cart."  Again, we appreciate your patience throughout this process and look forward to serving you once the carts have been completely deployed.

  • In January, please continue to place your carts wherever your trash and recycling was normally collected from.  Carts were delivered to the front of residences in all cases because the delivery crews needed to verify house numbers when delivering carts.  This could not be accurately done from the rear or side of a property.
  • These carts MUST NOT be used until Wednesday, January 6th.  The current solid waste contractor's trucks are not compatible with them and cannot lift them.  If garbage or recycling is put out in these carts before the end of the year, Blue Diamond WILL NOT pick it up.
  • The last garbage pickup by Blue Diamond will be Saturday, December 26th; the last recycling pickup by Blue Diamond will be Thursday, December 31st.  The first recycling pickup by the Borough will be Wednesday, January 6th; the first garbage pickup by the Borough will be Thursday, January 7th.  We realize that this is a full 12 days between pickups instead of 7, but we felt that it was important to start pickups on their normal day (rather than have to shift the date and/or pay overtime for collection on a holiday or weekend), and with extra room afforded by the 95 gallon carts there should not be any capacity problems.
  • Rumors circulating on Facebook about the Borough charging homeowners a replacement for damaged carts is "fake news."  Solid waste carts are designed to be left outside, carry heavy loads and to stand up to use and abuse, but normal wear and tear will take its toll and they will break from time to time.  If a cart is found to be damaged it will be swapped out for a new one and the old one will be repaired.  The Borough has purchased spare carts for this purpose.  NO HOMEOWNER WILL BE CHARGED FOR REPLACEMENT OF A DAMAGED OR STOLEN CART.
As always, for any questions regarding solid waste pickup please refer to the Borough Garbage and Recycling page http://www.washingtonboro-nj.gov/garbage-recycling.html , call (908) 689-3600 x120 or email [email protected]
