Tips For Travelling On Snow Covered Roads

The local mountains received their first taste of winter today. The fresh snow was beautiful and many people drove up to enjoy the weather. With that in mind, Crescenta Valley Station has a few reminders to help you enjoy your time in the mountains.

  1. Drive a vehicle that is properly equipped for the elements. Many people today came up in their sports cars with summer tires. Let’s just say they had a difficult time navigating the road.  The vehicles that became stuck blocked the Cal Trans snow plows from clearing the road.  This made the road more hazardous for the other travelers since the snow plows had to assist the stuck vehicles instead of clearing the road.  Four wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles are best suited for the snow and ice. Further, always bring chains and have them on BEFORE you drive on the ice. If you do not have the proper vehicle, equipment, or knowledge, find someone who does.  It is not worth it to take a chance and have your vehicle slide off the road and become stuck.

  1. Make sure your vehicle is full of gas. There are no gas stations in the mountains.

  1. Dress in layers. One of the layers should be waterproof/repellant. The weather can turn cold and windy suddenly.

  1. There is no cell service in the mountains. However, make sure the phone is fully charged since many people use the flashlight feature.

  1. There are many road closures and chain requirements. Find out the latest information here:

  1. Due to the Bobcat Fire restoration projects, many roads and areas in the forest are closed.  The space for you to enjoy the mountains will be limited. If an area is too crowded, consider turning around and coming another time.

  1. Do not block the roadway when you park.  With space at a premium, some people park with their vehicle impeding traffic.  This is not only dangerous, it prevents emergency vehicles and the snow plows from accessing people in need.

The beauty of the Angeles National Forest in winter is in full display.  Please heed the above advice to have an event free experience.
