Crime Alert Bulletin for the week of December 21-27, 2020

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 12-22-20 at 2:39 a.m., Officer Leyson checked on an occupied parked vehicle at the Valero gas station at Skyline Drive and Westmoor Avenue. The officer noticed two occupants appeared to be asleep in the vehicle. The passenger, a 25-year old Richmond resident, had a Sawzall and a home-made Slim Jim on his lap. These tools are typically used by people who steal catalytic converters—a crime that has experienced a recent uptick in the Bay Area. The subject was issued a citation for possession of burglary tools. A 29-year old Milpitas resident who was in the driver’s seat, was issued a citation for possession of narcotic paraphernalia and for having outstanding warrants.

On Tuesday, 12-22-20 at approximately 6:05 p.m., Officer Martin was dispatched to a call of a vehicle collision on northbound Highway 35, north of Hickey Boulevard. Several other agencies were notified of the collision, as it occurred in the borders of Daly City, Pacifica and the California Highway Patrol’s jurisdictions. The dispatcher advised someone on the scene was being combative. Officer Martin saw there was a head-on collision involving two vehicles and saw a paramedic standing in front of a male who was sitting in the shrubbery on the shoulder of the highway. Officer Martin observed that the was intoxicated, and the subject became combative and yelled obscenities with the officers and paramedics. The subject, a 25-year old Daly City resident, attempted to spit at Officer Gill, and Officer Martin placed the subject under arrest for obstructing an officer and resisting arrest. The subject was transferred to the custody of the CHP.

On Sunday, 12-27-20 at 6:31 p.m., Officer Chittenden was dispatched to the Mission Street Walgreen’s store on a report of a in-progress shoplifting. The Loss Prevention Officer said he confronted a subject about stealing items, and the suspect walked past the open checkout stands and out into the parking lot without paying for the items. The reporting party kicked the basket the suspect was holding in his hand, and the merchandise fell onto the ground. The subject then pulled his shirt up to display a wooden handle of a machete in his waistband and the blade running down the subject’s pants leg. The reporting party also saw the handle of a pistol on the other side of his waistband. The suspect then picked up some items and stuffed them inside his shirt while threatening the reporting party. The suspect then crossed over the street and got onto a 14 MUNI bus. The 59-year old reporting party was unharmed. This investigation is continuing.

Scams/Other

“American Geek Squad”

On Monday 12-21-20 at 11:00 a.m., a 79-year old Daly City resident received a phone call from someone claiming to be from “American Geek Squad” who told her she was eligible for a $399 refund on her computer due to the computer company going out of business. The victim thought this was legitimate because she had bought an unknown brand desktop computer a couple of years ago. The victim said she received some forms on a computer to fill out, and she filled out her name, phone number, address and the last four digits of her social security number. The victim said she was given steps of things to do on the computer to give American Geek Squad remote access to her computer, but she does not recall exactly what she did. The victim logged onto her Bank of America bank account and believed the subject she gave remote access to move some money into her account to make it seem like American Geek Squad accidentally deposited $3,999 instead of $399. The victim spoke to someone else who instructed her to remedy the mistake by getting gift cards in the amount of the difference, and to provide him with the information on the cards. The victim went to Nordstrom Rack and attempted to purchase seven gift cards in the amount of $500 each. When she did this, she said the cashier informed her that this may be a scam. The victim did not listen to the cashier. The victim returned home and spoke to someone else who gave him his identification number. The victim expressed to that person that she was worried this may be a scam. The subject told her she could get into trouble with the law and provided her with his driver's license. The victim then provided the subject with the gift card information. Later in the day, the victim’s son-in-law learned what the victim did and confirmed it was a scam. The victim’s son-in-law, a computer engineer, was able to remove any kind of spyware on her computer. All of the numbers the victim took down did not belong to anyone.

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
