A two-vehicle fatal collision on Mariposa Road is under investigation; witnesses should contact Hesperia Station

INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision
LOCATION: Mariposa Road / Sycamore Street, Hesperia
SUMMARY:
On January 4, 2021, at approximately 10:39 a.m., deputies from the City of Hesperia, along with rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department, responded to the intersection of Sycamore Street and Mariposa Road reference a two-vehicle traffic collision involving a sedan and pickup truck. Despite first responder efforts, the driver of the sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Deputies from the Hesperia Station Traffic Division responded and assumed the investigation. Preliminary evidence indicates the driver of the sedan was driving northbound on Mariposa Road passing vehicles at a high rate of speed. The pickup was driving southbound on Mariposa Road. Witnesses stated the sedan attempted to pass another northbound vehicle by crossing into the southbound lane. The sedan and pickup truck had a head on collision. The driver of the pickup, an 88-year-old male, suffered major injuries and was transported to the hospital for further treatment.
The collision remains under investigation and any witnesses are asked to contact Deputy E. Perez from the Hesperia Station.
