Arrests made following thefts from local businesses

On Wednesday, January 6th Fruitport Police Officers were dispatched to a Retail Fraud (Shoplifting) incident at a business in the 5600 block of Harvey Street. A description of the suspect’s vehicle was provided by witnesses and relayed to Officers by Central Dispatch. Officers patrolling the area quickly located the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop. The vehicle then fled. Officers pursued the vehicle which travelled to Eastbound I-96. Due to the speed and recklessness of the vehicle, Officers cancelled the pursuit. A short time later the vehicle was located at the Spring Lake exit where the driver had lost control and crashed. Officers, with the assistance of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, were able to locate the 4 suspects, 2 of which had fled on foot.

Property was recovered from 3 area businesses inside the vehicle. The value of the merchandise totaled $10,542. All suspects, who reside in the Kalamazoo area, were lodged at the Muskegon County Jail and are awaiting arraignment. Charges requested include Retail Fraud 1st Degree, Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property, Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement, Receiving and Concealing a Stolen Vehicle.
