On 12/27/20, at approximately 5:37 PM, deputies with the Camarillo Police Department responded to a shooting that occurred in the area of Lomita Street and N. Glenn Drive in the City of Camarillo. Deputies located two adult males who had been shot by unknown suspect(s). One victim was shot several times while seated in his car. The other victim was shot as he tried to get out of the car to flee the assault. Both victims were transported to a local hospital where they were treated for their injuries. The victims have since been released from the hospital. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, in conjunction with the Camarillo Police Department’s Special Enforcement Detail, conducted an investigation which led to the identification of Jose Rivera and Juan Cervantes as the suspects in what is believed to be a crime motivated by gang association. On 12/29/20, Rivera was located during the service of a search warrant at his residence in the 100 block of Lemon Drive in Camarillo. At that time, Rivera was arrested and booked into the Sheriff’s Pre-Trial Detention Facility for a violation of his Post-Release Community Supervision (PRCS) terms while the investigation continued. On 12/31/20, Cervantes was located on a bus bound for Tijuana, Mexico. Cervantes was captured with the assistance of Customs and Border Protection Agents and officers from the California Highway Patrol in San Ysidro, California. Cervantes was arrested, transported back to Ventura County, and booked at the Sheriff’s Pre-Trial Detention Facility for a violation of his parole terms. On 1/8/21, Rivera was arrested for two counts of PC 245(a)(2) – Assault with a Firearm and one count of PC 186.22(b)(1) – Participation in a Criminal Street Gang. Rivera remains in custody and his bail has been set at $1,000,000. He is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on 1/12/21. On 1/8/21, Cervantes was arrested for two counts of PC 664/187 – Attempted Murder, and one count each of PC 186.22(b)(1) – Participation in a Criminal Street Gang, PC 29800(a)(1) – Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and PC 30305(a)(1) – Felon in Possession of Ammunition.
