Advisory

January 15, 2021 Coronavirus update from Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19 Wednesday, January 15, 2021
VACCINE IN BURR RIDGE - “MASK FOR US”

Burr Ridge’s own Dr. Russ Petrak has informed me that his medical group, Metro Infectious Disease Consultants (“MIDC”), will be receiving vaccine and expects to start administering vaccinations the week of January 25. All Phase 1B (including 65 years of age and older) should be eligible for vaccine then. MIDC is located at 901 McClintock in Burr Ridge. You can call 630- 654-4201 (press #3) to make an appointment at this time. Janet and I have called for ours.

Another of our great residents, John Atkinson, is advocating on behalf of Senior Star and others leading an admirable effort to have all seniors in independent living communities signed up for vaccinations, especially by giving those over age 80 priority. We want these very eligible citizens to have their chance to be vaccinated if they want to be vaccinated. If you know persons in this category and living situation, please reach out to them with all available information about how and where to be vaccinated. Give them the choice and opportunity to remain independent.

The Governor announced today that Phase 1A vaccinations are on track to be completed next week so that Phase 1B vaccinations can start around the state on January 25. In addition to MIDC, Cook County and DuPage County health departments are moving toward plans to implement Phase 1B vaccinations consistent with the Governor’s announcement. Phase 1B comprises about 1.3 million frontline essential workers and 1.9 million residents age 65 and older. Phase 1B Frontline Essential Workers (defined as “essential for the functioning of society”) include: Firefighters and volunteers (EMS personnel are in Phase 1A); Law Enforcement and Corrections Officers; Food & Agriculture Workers, Postal Service Workers, Manufacturing Workers, Grocery Store Workers, Public Transit Workers, Education sector, including teachers, support staff; and Daycare Workers.

Although focus is moving toward vaccinations, “Mask for US” is still the mantra in 2021. Social distancing remains vitally necessary, as is frequent and thorough hand washing after returning home or encountering others. There have been publications advocating gargling with diluted antiviral mouthwashes (read up from well-recognized health publishers if interested) and exercise common sense and caution in all you do.

Total COVID-19 cases in Burr Ridge as of today is at 866; 609 (DuPage) and 257 (Cook), up 65 cases since my January 6 mayor message. Statewide positivity continues downward and is now about 8.3%. The Region 8 positivity rates are at about 10% but trending downwards, well below the 12% threshold of concern. DuPage County is at 9% but Kane County is at 11%. Area hospitals continue to be able to treat those needing treatment with the availability of ICU beds increasing – a good metric and a blessing that others in our country may not share. As it is the birthday of Martin Luther King, I leave you with these two related thoughts:

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”
and
“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” – Martin Luther King
