Two Additional Manhattan Beach COVID-19 Deaths Reported - New Cases Continue to Soar: Press Release

Two Additional Manhattan Beach COVID-19 Deaths Reported
New Cases Continue to Soar

Manhattan Beach, CA (January 16, 2021) – Yesterday, the County Department of Public Health reported two additional COVID-19 deaths for Manhattan Beach. This marked the fourth death in the last week and brings Manhattan Beach’s total number of COVID-19 deaths to eight since the beginning of the pandemic.

“I would like to extend my condolences to the families and friends in Manhattan Beach who grieve the loss of a loved one due to COVID-19. The City wishes you healing and peace,” said Mayor Suzanne Hadley. “COVID-19 deaths close to home remind us that the coronavirus continues to be a challenge and concern. Until more of us are vaccinated, as a community we must remain vigilant in wearing our masks, maintaining social distance, and keeping up with our hygiene.”

In one month, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases of residents in the City of Manhattan Beach has skyrocketed. During the week of December 7-13, there were 45 new cases in the City of Manhattan Beach; during the week of January 4-10, there were 101 new cases – more than double the amount. To date, the County has confirmed 980 COVID-19 cases amongst Manhattan Beach residents.

Additionally, local hospital capacity continues to be stressed as the entire region manages limited bed capacity. Within the south region of Los Angeles County, in which Manhattan Beach is located, 13 hospitals report that on average, from January 3-9, only 60 of 2,186 non-ICU hospital beds and 8 of 479 ICU hospital beds were staffed and available.

These stark numbers serve as a reminder that we must continue to follow public health orders,  wear a face cover in public, wash hands regularly, keep at least six feet of physical distance when in public, limit mixing with people you don't live with, quarantine for ten days if you have traveled or been in close contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19, and vaccinate when the opportunity comes available.
