Advisory

Mail theft can lead to fraud! Be extra careful with your mail to prevent ID theft!

Mail theft can often lead to identity fraud. With tax season’s W-2’s and COVID-19 stimulus checks being mailed out, mail thieves will be active this time of year. Stop and think for a moment about all of the personal identification information that can be taken from your mailbox: name, address, phone number, social security number, bank account number on outgoing checks, credit card number, account numbers at financial institutions, incoming checks, rebates, driver’s license… A LOT of information about you can be through the mail.

Here are a few tips to help your mail stay secure.

1. Cut Down on Junk Mail

Start by limiting inflow. Cut down on the amount of credit card and other offers. You can “unsubscribe” from a lot of junk email that will help limit junk mail you receive.

2. Shred your Mail

Get yourself a good paper shredder, and open every piece of mail that you do get to see if there is anything in there that needs to be shredded.

3. Protect Outgoing Mail

Not only should you safeguard against mail fraud for incoming mail, but you should also be concerned about the outgoing mail. As often as possible, drop your outgoing mail off at the post office.

4. Sign Up for USPS Informed Delivery ASAP

Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery. With Informed Delivery, you can digitally preview actual photographic images of letter-sized mail pieces that are in the process of being sent to your address. This way you know what to expect to receive in the mail, and if anything doesn’t make it to your mail box. Sign up for informed delivery at www.usps.com

5. Check your mailbox and check it often!

Mail theft leads to fraud, so do not let your mail collect. If you are going on vacation, place a vacation hold on your mail so it does not build up. Get in the habit of checking your mail every day.

Following a few steps can ensure your mail and your identity stay as secure as possible!
