Sheriff Richard J. Behnke, reports that on 01/20/2021 at approximately 1721 hours his office was called to investigate a personal injury crash at the intersection Pokagon Hwy. and Wilbur Hill Rd., Pokagon Township, Cass County Michigan.
Investigation shows that 22 year old, Dowagiac resident, Nicholas Baker, was traveling eastbound on Pokagon Hwy. Mr. Baker failed to stop in an assured clear distance striking the side of the vehicle driven by 38 year old Dowagiac resident, Rebekah Jones, who was stopped waiting for a third vehicle to turn north onto Wilbur Hill Rd. Mr. Baker then struck the rear of a third vehicle driven by 25 year old Cassopolis resident, Lashell Phipps. Ms. Phipps vehicle was launched across the lanes, left the roadway, the came to a rest in the trees to the northeast. Ms. Phipps was transported to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital for her injuries.
Seat belts were used and airbags were not deployed. It does not appear that alcohol and/or drugs were a factor. Assisting in this crash includes Central Cass Fire Department and Pride Care Ambulance.
