Safety Tips When Driving in the Rain

The City of Rosemead wants to remind residents to drive safely in the rain. The following safety precautions can help you get to your destinations safely:

• Replace old or brittle wiper blades.
• Do not drive with any windows frosted or fogged up.
• Drive the speed limit. Slowdown, if needed. Be cautious of large water puddles.
• Brake early and with less force, and make turns slower than you would in normal driving conditions.
• Leave extra room between other vehicles.
• When entering your vehicle with wet shoe soles, dry them on your vehicle carpet to prevent shoes from sliding on the pedals or you may carry an extra pair of shoes in your vehicle.
• Headlights must be on when it’s raining and when windshield wipers are in use. It will help with visibility and helps others see you.
• Stay alert to observe any potential problems on the road ahead.
• “Hydroplaning” happens when heavy rain and fast speeds leads to your vehicle riding on top of a thin layer of water, a dangerous situation that can lead to uncontrolled skidding or drifting out of the lane. If you find yourself hydroplaning or skidding:
o Do not brake or turn suddenly. Ease your foot off the gas until the vehicle slows and you can feel traction on the road again.
o Turn your steering wheel in the direction of the skid. As you recover control, gently straighten the wheels.
o If you need to brake, do it gently with light pumping action. If your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, then brake normally, the vehicle’s computer will mimic a pumping action.
• The law requires hands-free devices when on the roadway. Do not text while driving. Wait until you are parked to engage in a text message or phone call.
• A flashing red signal light or traffic signals darkened by a power outage, are to be treated the same as an intersection posted with STOP signs.

We hope these tips will help make you be safer and more cautious while on the road. Always wear your seatbelts and keep your eyes on the road.
