Winter Storm Update

Winter Storm Preparation Update

Westfield remains under a Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service until 6:00AM on Tuesday, with heavy snowfall expected and wind gusts up to 35MPH. In anticipation of the storm, the Department of Public Works has been pre-treating roads throughout Town today.

Governor Murphy has declared a State of Emergency, during which time only essential travel is permitted. Please stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

PLOWING
Due to the anticipated severity and extended duration of this storm, it is likely that our Public Works employees will face a 36-hour plowing operation. These efforts will begin in the early morning hours on Monday, and will continue until all roads are cleared -- likely on Tuesday. Due to some current COVID quarantines within the department, Public Works is operating at slightly reduced staffing levels, which, in combination with the scope of this storm, will mean that plowing will take some time. Please be patient and stay off the roads until Public Works has completed plowing. Curb-to-curb plowing is the DPW's top priority, which will be followed by clearing downtown parking lots and priority sidewalks, such as those at the train station, and then park walkways.

As always, throwing/tossing/blowing snow back into a plowed road is not permitted, and all sidewalks must be shoveled within 24 hours of the snowfall ending. To avoid having plowed snow pushed onto cleared areas, the Town advises waiting until plowing is complete before clearing sidewalks.

PARKING
If you have not already done so, please remove cars from the street in order to help facilitate plowing efforts. The Westfield Police Department will issue tickets for violations of on-street parking in more than three inches of snow. Downtown residents without driveways may park in Lot 1 behind Farinolio/Chipotle.

In addition, the following locations are subject to alternate side of the street parking after three inches of snow have fallen, and vehicles need to park on the side of the street with even house numbers (except for Ross Place).
▪ 400 & 500 block of Downer Street
▪ 400 block of First Street
▪ Livingston Street
▪ Cacciola Place
▪ Cowperthwaite Place between Elm and Clark Streets
▪ 300 & 400 block of Lenox Avenue
▪ 200 block of St. Paul Street
▪ Entire length of Ross Place (park on the side with odd numbers only)

FIRE DEPARTMENT SAFETY REMINDERS
The Westfield Fire Department reminds residents not to run any type of fuel-powered equipment inside of your home or in any enclosed space such as a garage, even if the garage door is open. This includes generators, gas grills, charcoal grills and portable fireplaces. All equipment should be at least 15 feet from your home. Running fuel powered equipment in or too close to an enclosed structure, including a garage with its door open, can lead to deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure all candles and all fires inside an approved wood burning stove or fireplace are attended to at all times. In addition, ensure that the tailpipe of your vehicle is completely clear of snow or ice before starting your engine.

RECYCLING
Our recycling contractor, Grand Sanitation, has confirmed that Zone 1 collection has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 6. We will assess conditions tomorrow to determine if Tuesday's pickup for Zone 2 needs to be rescheduled as well.
