IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAYOR GRASSO ON COVID-19

VACCINE IN BURR RIDGE - “MASK FOR US”

We have now entered our twelfth continuous month of COVID-19 dominating all aspects of our lives. The Governor’s initial Stay At Home Order was effective March 20, 2020 (and was to end April 7) – but, we are still conducting our lives under some aspects of that order because the virus and pandemic have continued to challenge our economic, physical and mental resources. Many people continue to become infected, and some die. Vaccinations are being administered in phases on a priority bases to those that want them. Any vision into 2021 has to consider the virus, vaccination (or not) – and now variants.

I attended the Monday, DuPage County Board of Health call today. While positivity rates (downward), availability of hospital beds (upward), and new admissions (downward) are all trending in our favor, the UK and more recently South African and Brazil variants have been found their way into our country – with nine cases of the UK variant in Illinois. So far, no one in IL has been diagnosed with the South African or Brazil variants. All three are said to be more contagious – a hard concept to comprehend given the virulence of COVID-19 itself.

The City of Chicago has reached Phase 4 and can open more of its businesses. Chicago met the triad of (1) under 6.5% positivity for three consecutive days, (2) hospital bed availability over 20% for the same period, (3) with no sustained increase in new cases seven out of the last ten days. Cook and DuPage (with Kane) are close to achieving Phase 4 status, as we need the positivity rate to come down a bit more (it’s just over 6.5%). I hope that Burr Ridge will reach Phase 4 this week.

DuPage is leading the state in the percentage of population vaccinated with two doses at 2.11%. Cook is at 1.67% but of course, Cook also has many more residents. Vaccinations sites are increasing (now 96 in DuPage but only 42 operating currently due to the lack of vaccine availability). Most hospitals, pharmacies, clinics and boards of health are involved in varying degrees. As you may recall, we are in Phase 1B – essential workers (as defined) and those age 65 and over. DuPage BOH estimates that with vaccinations running at 14,000 daily, it can reach the goal of vaccinating 80% of Phase 1B by the end of April - assuming vaccine is available.

Metro Infectious Disease Consultants (“MIDC”) continues to receive and administer vaccines to those eligible under Phase 1B. I know some of you have not been able to “get through.” Try emailing you name(s), addresses, and date(s) of birth to [email protected]. Janet and I have scheduled our first injection for tomorrow. I encourage you to make a considered decision to be vaccinated.

Total COVID-19 cases in Burr Ridge as of today is at 933: 651 (DuPage) and 282 (Cook), up “only” 26 cases since my January 25 Message. The 14-day active case count is also just 49, the lowest total since November 8, 2020.
