Winter Storm Update

WINTER STORM UPDATE: FEBRUARY 1, 5:30PM

Westfield remains under a Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service until 6:00AM on Tuesday, and the State of Emergency issued by Governor Murphy remains in effect statewide. This storm is far from over; additional heavy snowfall is expected in the overnight hours and in the early part of Tuesday. Please stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

PLOWING
The Department of Public Works continues its plowing operations, an effort that is likely to span 36+ hours. At this point, our crews have reached nearly every road at least once, and will continue to work all night and through tomorrow until the roads are clear. Please be patient -- this is a long-duration storm with extensive impacts. Westfield has 380 municipal roadways which total approximately 100 miles in length and 200 miles of travel lanes, plus shoulders, to plow for just one pass. Clearly this storm requires multiple passes as the snow continues to accumulate. These efforts are impeded when snow is tossed or blown back into plowed streets -- which is prohibited in Westfield for safety reasons. This activity creates additional work for the DPW and also can contribute to dangerous icing conditions on roadways. To avoid having plowed snow pushed onto cleared areas, the Town advises waiting until plowing is complete before clearing sidewalks.

POLICE DEPARTMENT
Chief Battiloro reports that the Westfield Police Department has issued 95 tickets for vehicles in violation of the on-street parking rules in more than three inches of snow. The police continue to see cars parking on the street after a plowing pass is completed, which is not permitted. All cars must stay off the roads until the Town has finished all plowing. Tickets will continue to be issued as necessary throughout tonight and tomorrow.

RECYCLING
Our recycling contractor, Grand Sanitation, has confirmed that Zone 2 collection, scheduled for tomorrow, has been moved to Saturday, February 6, along with Zone 1 that was canceled today.
