Correction:CMPD responds to call resulting in an officer involved shooting involving man later transported to hospital in stable condition

COSTA MESA, Calif. (Feb. 2, 2021) – On Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021, at approximately 5:16 a.m., the Costa Mesa Police Department (CMPD) received a 911 call from a residence in the 600 block of Baker Street reference an unknown trouble involving an adult male. Officers arrived and attempted to speak with the individual to determine what had occurred as he walked away from the location. As the individual walked away, officers saw he was holding a knife. Officers attempted to get him to stop and drop the knife; however, he continued to walk toward Enterprise Street without responding to the officers. The man then brandished the knife and charged at the officers. The individual did not respond to commands made by the officers to drop the weapon, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred. The individual was treated at the scene by officers and Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue and was transported to a nearby hospital with wounds to his arm. At present, the man is in stable condition.
There were no other parties or officers reported injured in this incident. Two knives and two box cutters were recovered at the scene.
As per standard protocol, the Orange County District Attorney will handle the officer involved shooting investigation.
No further information will be released by CMPD.
